Some people always seem to believe they are better than others. They think they are smarter, more capable, or more successful. They underestimate, judge & criticizes people based on their skills, education, jobs, money, or past experiences. They may even believe that someone who was once below them will never be as good as they are.
There is nothing wrong with being proud of what we have achieved. The problem begins when we use our achievements to make others feel small.
I’ve experienced being treated this way. But life goes on, and people continue to grow and evolve. We are not meant to stay the same person forever. We learn new things, gain experience, and discover abilities we may never have known we had. The person we underestimate today may achieve things we never expected tomorrow. That is why we should be careful about judging others. We only see a small part of their lives, and we cannot always know what they are capable of becoming.
When the Past Becomes a Measure of Everything
Sometimes, people hold on to their past achievements or positions. They remember when they had more experience, more money, or more authority than others, and they become used to feeling superior. But things can change when they have to build something on their own. Someone who once thought they were the most capable person in the room may struggle and achieve far less than they expected.
Life has a way of reminding us that past success does not guarantee future success, and being ahead of someone once does not mean we will always stay ahead.
Our achievements should teach us humility, not give us a reason to look down on others. Past success does not guarantee future success, and no one is destined to stay ahead forever.
When They Cannot Accept Being Challenged
Another problem happens when people who feel superior and often criticize others cannot accept criticism themselves. When the person they underestimate finally speaks up, they may focus on that person's reaction instead of reflecting on their own behavior. They may feel attacked while ignoring the words or actions that caused the conflict.
Sometimes, the issue goes deeper than pride. When people become consumed by jealousy or resentment, they start seeing others as competition rather than individuals who are simply living their lives. Even someone else's growth, happiness, or success can feel like a personal threat to them. They may interpret ordinary actions as attempts to challenge or outshine them, even when the other person is doing nothing more than focusing on their own life.
We All Have Room to Grow
I believe life becomes easier when we stop trying to prove that we are better than other people. There will always be someone who knows more than we do, has different skills, or achieves things we have not achieved. That does not make us less valuable.
Instead of feeling threatened by other people's progress, we can learn from them. Instead of judging their lives, we can focus on improving our own.
Someone else's success does not take away our own value.
We do not have to be the smartest person in the room. We do not have to be the most successful person among our friends. And we do not need to remind people of our past achievements just to feel important. As for me, I would rather keep learning and building the life I want than spend my time proving that I am capable to someone who has already made up their mind about me.
I know I still have a lot to learn, and I am fine with that.
